The Newport International Boat Show returns after being canceled last year

NEWPORT, RI (WPRI) – After more than a year off, the Newport International Boat Show is back and celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Boaters and customers gathered in downtown Newport on Thursday to launch one of the country’s largest and most prestigious boat shows, which spans 13 acres.

Attendees can stroll the docks to see new sailboats and powerboats, some making their very first debuts in the United States, according to the show’s website.

On the land side, there are hundreds of marine products, services and accessories to enhance the lifestyle of boaters.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the show is already registering high attendance compared to 2018 and 2019.

“It’s great to be back in person,” said one woman. “I can see the exhibitors, the participants, the sponsors. Everyone is so happy to see each other. “

Some of the COVID protocols in place include wearing masks indoors and in nearby areas.

The show is also a huge boost to local and state economies, especially as summer draws to a close. With participants from all over the world, local restaurants, shops and hotels are benefiting.

The show runs until Sunday and opens daily at 10 a.m.

Tickets can be purchased online or in person at a contactless site using a QR code, as they attempt to limit any exchange of cash for the purchase of tickets.
