Recreational boating in the United States by the numbers*

The boating boom in the United States continues with record sales in 2021 and strong momentum in 2022 as more Americans continue to return and rediscover the outdoors.

  • Interest in boating has never been greater with more than 415,000 first-time buyers on the marketand a total of 15.6 million pleasure craft in service in 2020. The industry has experienced tremendous growth with sale of boats reaching a 13-year high in 2020,which remain at high levels.Sales of new motorboat units in 2021 exceeded 300,000 units; this is only the second time the industry has reached this figure in nearly 15 years (2020 and 2021), ending 2021 around 4-6% below 2020 records and 7% above average sales over five years.
  • New boat sales in 2022 are expected to be on par with record 2020 levels.
  • Annual sales of boats, marine products and services in the United States totaled $49.3 billion in 2020, up 14% from 2019.

Boating in New York and the Tri-States by the Numbers

  • Sales in the New York and Tri-State Area grew 13% or more in 2020 , and dealers sell new boats as fast as they get them. As consumer demand continues, the New York Boat Show is a must-attend event to view and purchase the region’s most comprehensive selection of boats and place orders for future pleasures on the water.
  • State by State
    • New York Boat Sales totaled $966 million in 2020, including new motorboats, outboard motors, boat trailers and aftermarket accessories, up 19.6% from 2019. New York grew ranked 7and nationwide in total spending in 2020.
    • Connecticut Boat Sales totaled $257.9 million in 2020, including new motorboats, outboard motors, boat trailers and aftermarket accessories, up 31% from 2019. CT ranked 31st nationwide in total spending in 2020.
    • New Jersey Boat Salestotaled $506 million in 2020, including new motorboats, outboard motors, boat trailers and aftermarket accessories, up 13% from 2019. New Jersey ranked 19and nationwide in total spending in 2020.
