MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Amid unprecedented job losses, one Minnesota industry is hiring heavily – and it’s probably the last industry you would think of in the winter.
The boating industry is booming, and Jake Jacobson can attest to that. He is the general manager of Rapid Marine in Ham Lake.

“February and March it went downhill and we were a little worried and then all of a sudden in April, May, June, July it went crazy,” Jacobson said.
His store sells the fastest-paced boats ever, near and far.
“We have them from Georgia, Missouri, the east coast,” he said.
It seems like being so inside in the midst of the pandemic has made people really enjoy being outside.

“It’s a fun getaway activity with your family,” Jacobson said. “Like I said, we sell fun. We are very lucky.
And all of those sales have a multi-layered effect, starting with a factory in New York Mills that produces Minnesota boats by Lund and Crestliner. Dirk Hyde is President of Lund Boating Company.
“People are really embracing the aspect of boating and fishing, and we’re seeing that in all parts of the United States and Canada,” Hyde said. “And all the boats sold mean more jobs.”
Lund is hiring for dozens of other positions because all the extra play puts more people back to work.
“The hope that we have is that we could employ people who are looking for jobs to create wealth, to make people work,” he said.
