Get My Boat rental app lets you try life at sea

There are many ways to rent a vacation home in our computerized world, from architectural style-conscious rental agencies to family-oriented peer-to-peer platforms. But a unique company takes a new approach and offers overnight rentals on boats.

Launched in San Francisco in 2013, GetMyBoat is the world’s largest boat rental and charter market, offering 75,500 rentals in 171 different countries. Similar to VRBO and Airbnb, GetMyBoat allows potential customers to search and book boats from an app and also allows individual boat owners, rental shops and rental companies to list their personal watercraft.

While there are many luxury yachts and sailboats for hire on the site, GetMyBoat also offers smaller watercraft like kayaks and jet skis. This means that if you’re staying at a hotel in San Diego, California, for example, you can rent a single local kayak for around $ 14 an hour. There are also boats for hire outside of vacation destinations like Miami; a quick search revealed several boats available for daily charter in landlocked states like Colorado.

The most intriguing rentals are the overnight options. Boat rentals can be done with or without a captain, so there are choices both for people looking for a rental and for experienced bareboaters who want to find their own way.

There are also options for vacationers who never really want to navigate a boat. A bit like nautical guest houses, these rentals cover the whole range from sailboats moored to barges on the lakes to boats on the canals. This 42-foot barge moored in the French West Indies can accommodate four people for $ 318 per night, stays on site all the time, and provides a kayak, stand-up paddle board, and snorkel gear. Guests access the boat in a small dinghy which is located five minutes from the marina.

The risk in peer-to-peer platforms, as with anything expensive, is that homeowners and vacationers can have insurance and damage issues when renting. Open water and inexperienced boaters undoubtedly increase this risk, but GetMyBoat is trying to alleviate this problem with an insurance program that starts at just $ 40 a day.

For owners and vacationers looking to stay in a boat without taking it for a ride, GetMyBoat could be a perfect solution. Many boats sit idle in harbors or moorings most of the season, and the risk of nautical disaster is reduced if they never leave their dock. GetMyBoat might also be suitable for travelers looking for unique accommodation and boat owners wanting to alleviate the high cost of living on a yacht.
