The Fin

The basic tools I use most.

My must have boat building book list. Picture

I learned a few things casting the bulb. Among them, Great Stuff ani't so great for use as structural fill. The sections need to be closer together to make sure your lines are fair. Bondo is great for shaping plugs for molds, but that is about all.

I took a different tack on this plug. The fin is an NCAA foil shaape and the curve is pretty critical. John sent me full size

I called on lessons learned from my model airplane days and built the plug on a fram like I would a wing. 1/4" plywood sections with 2 by stringers and solid shaped leading and trailing edges.

Covered it with luan door skins and faired it with Bondo.

The big disk sander in the picture at right is a Powerboard. It is a bit expensive but it saved the whole project when I was getting discouraged about fairing the hull. It made short work of the fin pattern.

Fifty feet of 316 L stainless chopped up, threaded and bent so the ends come out of the fin paralell.

Here I am welding some 3/8 stainless rod between the bolts so that they will remain in position while being placed into the mold.

Now that all the parts are ready, we will proceed with the second big pour later this summer.

The finished plug looked much better than the bulb at this stage and is much stronger. It will have to be to stand up to ramming the sand over that wide area.

The flair to the hull was a bit of a problem. I crawled under the hull and made a pattern to fit the curve and then laminated two pieces of plywood together to make the basic shape. hen shaped and faierd the flair with a Sureform rasp and lots of 36 grit paper.
